If your answer to any of the above questions is yes, I understand that it can be challenging. However, the solution isn’t very far off. You will find it right here when we delve deep into ‘Communication,’ which, in my opinion, is one of the basic foundations of a happy existence.
Well, it wasn’t much earlier that even though I could communicate like a pro in my work surroundings and have people appreciating me, things weren’t that great when it came to communicating with my wife.
With my work involving management, I was exposed to and used communication, but my style was aggressive corporate communication, which didn’t work well in a relationship, especially one as important as your life partner.
In a corporate setting, effective communication involves using formal language, giving directives, and delivering key messages efficiently to achieve specific goals.
In a relationship, communication is about fostering open and meaningful dialogue, understanding each other’s communication styles, actively listening, expressing emotions, addressing misunderstandings, and nurturing a deeper emotional connection.
It was one-sided communication. I actively engaged in conversation while my wife used minimal or monosyllabic words.
Unknowingly, my conversation was more of like giving orders, passing judgement and taking ones-sided decision while my wife, to keep the peace and weighing the outcome of the matter, would just do as told as she was much more mature.
I thought I was the boss when after a while her always listening and do what I said began to get to my nerves. I tried coaxing her to speak she still didn’t open up much.
This type of communication was frustrating and indicated a lack of engagement or interest from the passive participant, in this case my wife.
Thus, it was important to address this imbalance and work towards fostering open and meaningful dialogue in which we could both contribute. I had to make the major part of the learning and take a step back from my snap the finger and get the work done attitude and understanding where my wife was coming from. Understanding each other’s communication styles and actively listening to one another helped us bridge this gap and create a more balanced and fulfilling interaction to a large extent.
